StarPrint/VB v3.5.1

Our next generation of StarPrint/VB is available! This version is a complete rewrite, and you won't believe the changes!
StarPrint/VB v3.0

StarPrint/VB 3.5.1 Overview

A source code printing add-in for Visual Basic, StarPrint/VB comes in two editions: Standard and Professional. The Standard Edition allows you to print and preview your Visual Basic source code on nicely formatted pages. The Professional Edition gives you even more!

And yes, the Standard Edition is now available as a FREE DOWNLOAD, and is no longer bundled with Object Briefcase.

Here is a short list of features:

Code Selection Fully integrated with the Visual Basic IDE, StarPrint/VB allows you to select and print out everything from your entire project down to the single procedure you are working on! With the push of a button, you can have your entire project's source code formatted and printed!

New! Now you can drag and drop from the Winodws Explorer as well!

Automatic Formatting StarPrint/VB automatically formats your source code for you (being careful to preserve your indenting), which includes:
  • Font size control
  • Module header description
  • Comment highlighting
  • Procedure headers in a larger font
  • Line wrapping (with proper indenting!)
  • Automatic line separators between procedures
  • Orphan control (to avoid cutting procedure headers in half)
  • Option to print one procedure per page
  • Ability to specify the starting Page number for very large projects.
Filtering And Sorting Options StarPrint/VB allows you to filter what you print, so you don't waste paper or time:
  • Print/Skip procedures that are Public, Private, or Friend
  • Hide/Show attributes for Forms, Modules and Procedures

As well, you can sort your procedures three different ways:

  • As is (for those of you that keep your modules organized!)
  • Alphabetically
  • First by Public/Private/Friend, and then Alphabetically
Professional Edition Extra Features The Professional Edition comes with these extra features:
  • Optional cover page with your company name, logo, custom text, and copyright notice
  • Optional company name and small company logo on each page
  • Optional source code copyright notice on each page
  • Optional table of contents
  • Full font control
  • Full Syntax Highlighting Color printouts!
  • Prints your project name with your printouts when available

An additional "documentation" feature allows you to print out just the headers of your procedures for communicating with other developers the essentials that they need to use your programs.

StarPrint/VB Screen Shots

Here is a screen shot of the new StarPrint/VB Code Explorer. Notice that you can "open up" a Visual Basic Project file just like a folder to see its contents! If you click on a Visual Basic module, the right listview loads with all of its methods and properties, allowing you detailed selection for printing.

Here is screen shot of the Print Options tab:

Note that all options beginning with the "Print Cover Page" checkbox appears only on the Professional Edition.

Additionally, the following two tabs of options are provided with the Professional Edition. They include the Font Selection and Company Info tabs:

StarPrint/VB Version Update Details

Version 3.5.1 Changes
Released July 29, 2003
A fix was applied to better allow StarPrint/VB work with modules outside of the main project directory or its subfolders.

As well, StarPrint/VB was modified to allow you to specify the page # you want the printout to begin on. This will allow you to print a very large project (or projects) in smaller batches, allowing for contiguous page numering. In order to do this, the Table Of Contents has moved to a roman numeral system of page numbering to account for this. This change has, by necessity, made a disconnect between the absolute page numbering and the printed page numbers (in the Print Preview dialog and the print pages section of the Print dialog).

International font support has been provided through the "International Script" dropdown on the Fonts tab of the Options dialog. This will allow your strings and comments which use international code pages to print correctly.

Better access has been provided to allow changing printer settings on the fly for a particular print job.

The ability was added to reverse the order of the printed pages for those printers that reverse the order upon output.

Research was done to see if a "print to file" method would be able to be easily added to StarPrint. This feature is still unavailable with this version, but a workaround has been discovered. If you need this feature, simply add a printer to your system that prints to the "FILE:" port. Select the appropriate printer driver and then name your printer something like "Print To File". Then if you want to print to a file, select this printer and the operating system will ask you for a file name (you will have to watch for the dialog as sometimes it can go to the background... just use the taskbar to bring it to the front). Make sure to type in the path as well for your file or else it will end up in the StarPrint folder. The standard ending of files of this type is ".PRN".
Version 3.4 Changes
Released January 5, 2001
Folder Browsing has now been improved to support network folders via UNC, as well as the desktop.

Better support for parsing and syntax highlighting allows StarPrint/VB to handle long blank line wrapping.  As well their is better handling of quotes and comments that are on wrapped lines.

Changes were also made to support distribution through VBxtras.

Special thanks to Bruce Kellerman at Boeing for helping to find and fix two of the above bugs!

Version 3.3 Changes
Released April 24, 2000
Provides a fix for a bug that caused crashing on subsequent previews or prints on some configurations of Windows 95.  This release also includes a fix to keep the drive and directory boxes synchronized on the folder selection dialog.
Version 3.2.2 Changes
Released January 7, 2000
This version provides a fix to the font selection in the Professional Edition, as well as provides a concise explanation in the ReadMe.TXT file of how the fonts are used.
Version 3.2.1 Changes
Released July 12, 1999
This version replaces the common printer dialogs with custom ones to provide better integration, especially under Windows NT. Particularly improved is the ability to select Landscape or Portrait without losing the setting during the session.
Version 3.2 Standard Edition
New Features
You can now drag and drop folders, projects, and/or modules from the Windows Explorer to the Standard Edition of StarPrint/VB. This makes finding and loading files easier than ever.
Version 3.2 Professional Edition
New Features
On top of having the drag and drop features of the Standard Edition, the Professional Edition comes with these extra features:
  • Full syntax highlighting with improved color and font control. You can pick one mono-spaced font for your code, and then select color, bold and italic options for normal, comments, keywords and identifiers.
  • Optionally print out the name of the project (when available) at the top of every page, as well as on the cover page.
  • Optionally suppress the printing of module header information. This is useful when you are only printing out a single procedure.
